LEARN SABAR DRUMMING WITH MODOU

Sabar drumming originated in Senegal, West Africa and is a closely guarded tradition that has been passed down through generations within drumming families. It is a key part of Senegalese culture and derived from the spoken word. Centuries ago drummers would use the drums to send messages by rhythmic representations. Sabar is now used as a form of celebration and entertainment at events like baptisms, weddings, birthdays, political meetings, wrestling and festivals.

There are nine different types of drum which vary in size and shape, all producing different sounds and played with a sick and a hand. Each drum plays a different part which are played together to create complex polyrhythms.

Sabar has spread worldwide and there is a network of Sabar drummers and teachers, including Modou, who travel to the United Kingdom giving workshops and performances.
